Jean Paul Ngoboka (PhD, Linguistics)
Dr Jean Paul Ngoboka is a lecturer in the English Language and Linguistics section of the Department of Humanities and Language Education, School of Education, with specialization in Morphosyntax (Linguistics). He received his BA in English from former National University of Rwanda in 1993, his MA in Linguistics with Cum Laudein 2005 and his PhD in Linguistics in 2017from the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal, Durban, South Africa.
After completing his BA degree, he worked in several secondary schools as an English teacher before joining former Kigali Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) in 1999 as Assistant Lecturer. Since 1999 he has taught English in various higher institution of learning including former School of Finance and Banking (SFB), Saint Joseph Integrated Technical College (SJITC),former Rwanda Tourism University College (RTUC) and University of Kigali(UoK). He served as Deputy Dean in charge of Part-time programmes in the former School of Language Studies (SOLAS) at KIST and Head of Department of Languages at RTUC. Currently, he is English Language and Linguistics Subject Coordinator ; Deputy Team Leader of the English Sub-Component of the Rwanda Quality Basic Education for Human Capital Development Project implemented by Rwanda Education Board (REB) in collaboration with UR-College of Education ;Rapporteur of the University of Rwanda Language Management Scheme Committee ;and Focal person for the University of Rwanda Language Management Scheme at Rukara Campus.
Dr Ngoboka teaches linguistics related courses, including the following modules : (i) Undergraduate programme : Introduction to English Language and Linguistics ; Language Acquisition in Multilingual Settings ; English Structure and Analysis ; Aspects of Syntactic Rules ;Linguistic and Language Processing Theories ; Linguistic Aspects of Literary Texts ; Meaning and Language Use, etc.(ii)Postgraduate programme:Morphosyntax ; and Semantics, Lexicology and Terminology in Education.
Dr Ngoboka has been invited to several international conferences, including the following : 3rd Southern African Micro-linguistics Workshop (SAMWOP-3) organized by North-West University, Potchefstroom, South Africa, with the sponsorship of the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal (2014) ; International Conference on “Reconstructing Proto-Bantu Grammar” organized by Ghent University, Belgium, with the sponsorship of the University of Ghent (2018). He has secured a grant from TWAS-DFG (German Research Fund) to conduct research at Humboldt University, Germany in 2021. Also, as a PhD student,Dr Ngoboka was awardedthe University of Kwa-Zulu Natal Prestigious Doctoral Research Scholarshipas one of the best PhD candidates for two consecutive years (2014/2015).
Dr Ngoboka authored papers on morphosyntax, including the following (selected) : (i) ‘Agreement with locatives in Kinyarwanda : a comparative analysis’. (2018). Journal of African Languages and Linguistics, 39(1) : 65-106. (with Jochen Zeller) ; (ii) ‘Locative markers as determiners in Kinyarwanda’ (2017) Nordic Journal of African Studies,26(4) : 292–317 ; (iii)The conjoint/disjoint alternation in Kinyarwanda.’ (2017). In Jenneke van der Wal & Larry M. Hyman (Eds.), The conjoint/disjoint alternation in Bantu. Berlin : De Gruyter Mouton (p.349-389) (with Jochen Zeller) ; (iv) ‘On Parametric variation in Bantu, with particular reference to Kinyarwanda.’ (2015) Transactions of the Philological Society, 113(2), 206-231(with Jochen Zeller). He also co-authored a book chapter on Kinyarwanda to appear in Oxford Guide for the Bantu Languages (OGBL).
