University of Rwanda To Enhance The Capacity of STEM Lecturers In Online Pedagogy And The Design of Inclusive And Interactive Digital Contents

07 Mar 2023

On 6th March 2023, the University of Rwanda through the Centre for Open and Distance eLearning (CODeL) has resumed the training of STEM lecturers and e-champions on Online Pedagogy and Instructional Design with the Use of the EdTech Solutions for Interactive Content Materials. Now the second phase of a 5-day training is taking place at UR Rukara Campus in the Multimedia Studio.

This training is under the financial support of “Enhancing STEM Education through Inclusive and Interactive Digital Content in Rwanda” which derives from a grant won by the University of Rwanda from ENABEL through competition.

The project aims to improve the existing digital learning environment with a sustained and enhanced E-learning system supported by inclusive and interactive digital content that promotes STEM education to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 crisis in Rwanda.

It therefore seeks to improve multimedia digital content development infrastructure for STEM education, enhance human capital and institutional competence in digital multimedia materials development, and enhance inclusive quality STEM education through developed digital materials.

In line with this project, all UR colleges have been requested to adopt a blended teaching mode as the new pedagogy to be established at the University of Rwanda. Since then, the UR has moved to maximize online instructions and use face to face teaching where online seems impossible. To reinforce the implementation of the new pedagogy, Internet bandwidth has been increased in all campuses and the training on how to design online modules and upload learning materials has been provided to faculty staff as well as to the school E-Champions.

This also requires a strong human capacity in the design of inclusive and interactive digital contents using several EdTech tools. To enhance human individual and institutional capacity in digital multimedia-based learning materials development is sought to contribute to the achievement of the above project specific objective.

The team of the facilitators from CODeL will be taking the participants through theories and practical activities on different topics. They include :
• Recapitulation on Moodle Course design
• Working on course content with constructive alignment
• Introduction to Multimedia Studio
• Introduction to authoring tools and interactive content
• Preparation of course activities to be interactive
• Introduction to H5P
• Practical sessions on interactive content with H5P
• Introduction to iSpring Suite
• Practical session on interactive content with iSpring Suite, among others.

It is expected that through this training, participants will :
• get knowledge in the creation and use of interactive digital content materials to

ensure quality and continuity in teaching and learning at the University of Rwanda
• have access to the Multimedia studio where they will be trained on how to use
multimedia equipment, create the digital content, and upload them on UR
E-Learning Platform.

Since 2022, the University of Rwanda’s Centre for Open and Distance e-Learning (CODeL) endeavored to enhance the capacity of STEM Lecturers and e-Champions on Online Pedagogy and Instructional Design with the Use of the EdTech Solutions for Interactive Content Materials under the financial support of ENABEL. So far, more than 90 individuals have been equipped with necessary knowledge and skills which will enable them to create and use interactive digital content materials.
