17 Jan 2025

First-year students at UR Nyagatare Campus enthusiastically participated in the briefing session on the School Practice program

The University of Rwanda - College of Education (UR-CE) is launching its first-year school practice program, a crucial initiative designed to bridge theoretical knowledge and real-world teaching experiences. Scheduled to run from January 20 to January 31, 2025, the program will be hosted in schools near the UR-CE campuses in Remera, Rukara, and Nyagatare.

This initiative reflects UR-CE’s mission to develop competent, adaptable educators equipped to address the complexities of classroom teaching. By engaging students in practical settings early in their academic journey, the program aims to solidify their professional skills, refine their career aspirations, and instill a deep appreciation for the teaching profession.

Students actively engaged in the session, raising questions about the School Practice program, which were thoroughly addressed by the facilitators.

From January 14 to 16, 2025, UR-CE successfully conducted briefing sessions across its campuses to prepare first-year students for this transformative program. The sessions were held in Remera, Rukara, and Nyagatare, with students receiving detailed guidance on the objectives, expectations, and logistics of the school practice program. Topics covered included the importance of practical teaching, the workload and activities during the placement, and the assessment framework.

Associate Professor Philothere NTAWIHA, the Coordinator of School Attachment, School of Education, emphasized the importance of early exposure to classroom dynamics : “This program is a stepping stone for our students, offering them a chance to experience the realities of teaching while still in training. It helps them connect their academic learning with practical application, ensuring they are better prepared for their future careers.”

The upcoming school practice will place students in various schools near their respective campuses, allowing them to work closely with experienced teachers. Students will observe, participate in classroom activities, and even take on teaching responsibilities under supervision. This hands-on experience is designed to provide invaluable insights into the teaching profession and help students build confidence in their abilities.

UR-CE remains committed to its vision of producing competent and qualified educators who can effectively contribute to Rwanda’s education sector and beyond.
