‎From 4–5 October 2025, a delegation from the National Council of Persons with Disabilities (NCPD), led by the Executive Secretary, Mr. NDAYISABA Emmanuel, visited the University of Rwanda – Nyagatare and Rukara Campuses to assess progress and strengthen collaboration in promoting inclusive education for students with disabilities.

‎Upon arrival at UR Rukara Campus, the delegation was welcomed by the Principal, Prof. Florien Nsanganwimana. During the exchange, both sides discussed current initiatives and shared insights on enhancing accessibility, expanding assistive services, and strengthening disability awareness across the campus. Discussions covered the progress achieved in strengthening inclusion to date, as well as strategies to further improve support for students with disabilities.

‎The NCPD team held a working session with staff from the School of Inclusive and Special Needs Education, including the Dean, Dr. Patrick Suubi. The conversation focused on advancing academic programs, research, and community outreach in inclusive and special needs education to ensure that future educators are equipped to support diverse learners.

‎As part of the visit, the delegation also interacted with students with disabilities, listening to their experiences and suggestions on how the University can continue improving learning support, accessibility, and inclusive services.

‎They also toured the Resource Room, also known as the Student Support Centre, which plays a key role in providing assistive technologies and tailored services that enhance learning for students with disabilities. The Resource Room — managed by the School of Inclusive and Special Needs Education — has been operational since 2015, before the relocation of the College to UR Rukara Campus, and continues to serve as a vital support hub. Over the years, it has been strengthened through collaboration with development partners, including the Mastercard Foundation’s Leaders in Teaching (LIT) project, which supports capacity building for UR-CE academic staff and pre-service teachers, and the ANSWER project, which advances inclusive practices and equitable access for learners with disabilities on higher education in Rwanda.

The delegation tours the Resource Room to ensure assistive technologies are in place to enhance learning for students with disabilities.

‎The University reaffirmed its commitment to advancing inclusive education and looks forward to continued collaboration with NCPD to ensure that students with disabilities at UR benefit from equal opportunities, dignity, and an enabling learning environment.
