PROFILE OF DR. DOROTHY TUKAHABWA

Dorothy Tukahabwa lecturers Education Studies in the Department of Foundation Management and Curriculum Studies where she teaches on numerous modules ranging from sociological foundations of education ; academic and life skills ; comparative and international education, and social research methods.

She holds a PhD in the area of Contemporary Studies in Childhood, Youth and Parenthood at Canterbury Christ Church University (United Kingdom). Prior to that, she obtained a master’s degree in Social and Educational Research Methods and bachelor’s degree in Education (majoring in History and Religious Studies) from the University of Rwanda. She is also an alumnus of the British Educational Research Association (BERA), Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA), Organisation for Social Science Research in Eastern and Southern Africa (OSSREA) and the International Training Programme in Education for Sustainable Development in Higher Education.

Her PhD research entitled ‘Becoming Women ‘Scientists’ : Negotiating Gendered Constructions of Science at University in Rwanda’ explores the challenges young women encounter as they strive to pursue their careers in science, with reference to the University of Rwanda. It focuses explicitly on how issues of self and identity impact different points in the educational trajectory of young women. Although Dorothy’s thesis focuses on a single qualitative case study, it is also multidisciplinary - capturing elements related to education, gender, policies, and higher education managerial processes, which are all fundamental to her teaching responsibilities.

She has also presented a substantial number of papers in national and international conferences, notably in Rwanda, Senegal, Ethiopia, South Africa, Sweden, Luxembourg, and the United Kingdom. Some of her research outputs have been published as Book Chapters and Conference papers.
