During a collaborative learning session at RP Huye College, Digital Champions from the University of Rwanda – College of Education (UR-CE) and Rwanda Polytechnic (RP) engaged in a rich discussion on the applied methods of a Digital Champion.
Participants explored five core methods that Digital Champions can apply to support digital transformation in education—Mentoring, Facilitation, Coaching, Training, and Peer Learning. Each method plays a distinct yet complementary role in empowering educators and enhancing digital teaching and learning environments.
Through mentoring, Digital Champions share experiences, guide, and support colleagues in using digital learning platforms. This approach accelerates knowledge transfer and strengthens the sense of community among educators.
Facilitation focuses on supporting group processes to ensure participation and collaboration. For example, a Digital Champion may lead a workshop where staff co-create solutions for blended learning, building shared ownership and encouraging active engagement.
Coaching was highlighted as an essential method that promotes reflection and self-directed learning. By asking guiding questions, Digital Champions encourage teachers to design their own digital learning plans, thereby strengthening their problem-solving skills. Meanwhile, training involves providing structured instruction on digital tools and practices—such as short sessions on Moodle or Microsoft Teams—to build baseline competence and confidence in digital teaching.
The final method, peer learning, emphasizes collaboration and mutual support. Faculty members share best practices and lessons learned when integrating digital tools into their teaching, fostering a culture of openness, continuous improvement, and local innovation.
By the end of the session, participants recognized that applying these methods helps create a sustainable model of digital capacity building within institutions. The experience underscored the pivotal role of Digital Champions as catalysts for digital transformation in education—empowering peers, nurturing creativity, and fostering a community of continuous learning.
