The University of Rwanda – College of Education (UR-CE) has achieved a major international academic milestone with the accreditation of its Master’s and Doctoral programmes in Science Education by AQAS (Agentur für Qualitätssicherung durch Akkreditierung von Studiengängen e.V.), a reputable German quality assurance agency in higher education. The accredited programmes include Biology Education, Chemistry Education, Mathematics Education, and Physics Education, offered at both Master’s and PhD levels. All the programmes are run through the African Centre of Excellence for Innovative Teaching and Learning Mathematics and Science (ACEITLMS).
Following a comprehensive programme review, AQAS confirmed that the programmes comply with the Standards and Guidelines for Quality Assurance in the European Higher Education Area (ESG). The accreditation decision was adopted on 1 December 2025 and is conditional and valid until 31 December 2031.
This international recognition affirms the quality, relevance, and rigor of postgraduate training in science education at UR-CE. The accreditation process evaluated key areas including curriculum design, learning outcomes, research orientation, supervision, academic staffing, and internal quality assurance mechanisms, demonstrating strong alignment with international standards.
At the doctoral level, the programmes strengthen advanced research and innovation in science education, preparing high-level researchers, teacher educators, and academic leaders capable of generating knowledge that informs policy and improves teaching and learning.
At the Master’s level, the programmes continue to play a critical role in preparing highly qualified science teachers and education professionals equipped with strong subject mastery, modern pedagogical skills, and research-informed approaches.
Beyond programme validation, the AQAS accreditation enhances the international visibility and credibility of the University of Rwanda – College of Education. It opens opportunities for international collaboration, academic mobility, joint research, and recognition of qualifications across borders.
