The call was made during the inaugural ceremony of application for admission of prospective students at the University of Rwanda (UR). The ceremony attracted massive turn up of potential candidates, parents, guardians, education partners and the media. During the event, the online procedure for the 2016/2017 students enrollment was demonstrated and the audience had the platform to interact with the University officials.
In his opening remarks, Prof. Phil Cotton, the University of Rwanda Vice Chancellor briefly discussed some values of the University such as courage, oneness and creativity as reflected in the University of Rwanda Logo and encouraged the UR current and prospective community to uphold them. He also commended other education partners including the Ministry of Education, Rwanda Education Board (REB) and Rwanda Development Bank (BRD) who contributed for the online system for application to be a success.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Nelson Ijumba said that the University has come up with the new integrated online application system that will make it easier for the applicant to complete other related applications at a time. Ijumba who is the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Research also noted that the past two years have been difficult for applicants as they were obliged to apply again for sponsorship from REB and then BRD after admission. According to him, this will no longer be the case because everything is now incorporated into the new system.
“We made the system simpler, more efficient and even easier for those who apply in order to avoid duplication that surfaced in the previous applications,” said Ijumba, adding that the University has also established eleven Campus Information Centers which will serve as information desks for available courses and location of campuses that offer programmes needed. The centers will thus help the prospective students make the right decision.
Among the participants in the function was Mr Janvier Gasana the Director General of REB. In his remarks, he elucidated Ubudehe categories which is one of the criteria to be considered for selecting students. He however noted that other requirements are given more weight including the students’ performance in the national examinations and their choice of priority areas.
In the course of the launch, Colleges’ Principals were given an opportunity to brief the participants about the programme offered by their institutions and the location of their campuses. It was also communicated that the application exercise will only be made in English which is the language of instruction in the University.
